It’s no secret that we all get low from time to time – whether it’s exhaustion, a dip in mood, or simply running out of steam. Our “cup” really can empty.

I’ve always found that when you’re going through a rough patch, it’s so important to have a few things you can rely on to refill it.

Those things look different for everyone. Some people recharge by taking time alone, while others need the comfort and energy of being around people. For some, switching off with a film and doing nothing is exactly what’s needed; for others, getting moving – a run or a long walk – is what brings them back to life.

For me, I always return to the same familiar comforts – the things that make me feel a little more like myself again.

Movement👟

My first one is a pretty common choice – but it works for a reason.

Whenever I need to recharge, movement is always my go-to. Whether it’s a run, a walk, or a session at the gym, putting my headphones in, listening to my favourite music, and getting into my own, little zone, always helps me clear my head in a way that nothing else quite does.

And it’s not just during it that helps – it’s the after, too. Without fail, getting some fresh air or moving my body always leaves me feeling lighter, more confident, and better within myself.

Spending QUALITY time with those I love🩷

Note that QUALITY is capitalised here.

As a recent graduate who’s moved back home to live with my Mum, I know I’m incredibly lucky to be around her so much. But I’d argue there’s a common misconception that living with someone automatically means you’re spending quality time together.

In reality, the two don’t always go hand in hand. When you’re sharing a space around work, routines, and everyday commitments, conversations often revolve around exactly that – work, to-do lists, and the struggles of daily life.

Unfortunately, that kind of time doesn’t fill my cup. If anything, it can sometimes drain it.

That’s why intentional, quality time matters so much.

Making a plan – even something small – to simply be with someone. To laugh, to talk, and to connect without all the distractions.

My Mum and I now make it a point to go for a walk together at the weekend, just the two of us. And yes, we still chat about work and life – but it’s different. I always come away feeling lighter, calmer, and so much better for it.

Being with my dogs🐕

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — and what better thing to follow with than something else I truly love?

My dogs are my world. No matter how I’m feeling – sad, lonely, tired, upset, or anything in between – I can always count on my furry babies to lift my spirits.

Whether it’s taking them out for a walk, having a proper cuddle, or even just watching their little legs twitch while they sleep, they have an unmatched way of making everything feel a little bit better. Exactly the boost I need, every single time.

Cooking👩🏻‍🍳

Something else – a little more niche to my own interests – is cooking. It’s something that always brings me a real sense of peace.

There’s something incredibly therapeutic about preparing a good meal, whether it’s just for yourself, for friends and family, or for a whole table of people. From chopping and prepping the ingredients, to cooking everything together, and finally sitting down to enjoy something you’ve created — it’s both calming and deeply rewarding.

And because it brings me so much joy, I love sharing my recipes too – which you can check out here and here.

Cafe Trips☕

I’m not entirely sure why, but a café trip does wonders for me. Whether I’m sitting alone with an overpriced (but absolutely delicious) coffee, people-watching and enjoying the moment, or meeting up for a proper catch-up, it’s something I really love.

Caffè Nero is, of course, my go-to – great coffee, great matcha, and immaculate vibes. But honestly? I’m happy anywhere there’s a good cup in hand.

Reading, Watching and Listening🎭

And last — but of course not least — I love nothing more than simply switching off and chilling.

A good film, book, song, or podcast? Count. Me. In.

Whether it’s putting on a comfort romcom you’ve seen a hundred times, trying a new comedy, picking up a well-loved re-read or something completely outside your comfort zone, or just listening to a familiar, comforting voice talk about something you love — this one always works a charm for me!

So, there you have it – the little things I turn to when my cup feels empty.

It doesn’t matter whether your cup runs low after an hour or after a year; what matters is remembering to put yourself first every now and then.

Whatever it is that fills your cup, make space for it. Take the time to come back to the things that ground you, comfort you, and make you feel like yourself again. Life can be hard – and it’s never a failure to need your own space, your own time, and your own ways to refill your cup🥤✨
